The SLK R171 was the second-generation Mercedes-Benz SLK roadster with retractable hardtop
The R171 offered a variety of engines, starting with the SLK200 Kompressor. Popular, especially in the US, was the SLK350 with its V6 engine, pictured here
Its front nose design was derived from the Mercedes F1 race cars of that period

In 2008 the R171 received its usual mid-term facelift. The revised car came with a redesigned front bumper with a modified air dam and a pronounced arrow shape
In November 2012, Road&Track voted the SLK350 to be among their top ten picks for the year
The rear bumper featured a diffuser-style lower portion and the rearview mirrors were enlarged and offered LED indicators
Mercedes-Benz SLK R171 Special Edition
Various special editions were offered again for the SLK. It started with an “SLK Edition” in 2007
A “2Look Edition” was offered in 2009
This was followed in the same year with a “Grand Edition”
Mercedes-Benz SLK R171 AMG model
Top of the line was again the AMG model, this time with a 5.4 L V8 engine (M113), producing 360 hp with a max torque of 510 Nm (376 ft-lb)
The SLK55 came with an additional engine oil cooler, a lower and stiffer suspension and the in-house developed 7G-Tronic with AMG speedshift
In 2006 a special Black Series with fixed roof and 400 hp was launched, capable of a top speed of 280 km/h (174 mph)

Brabus enlarged the AMG engine to 6.1 L. It was capable of 445 hp with a max torque of 635 Nm (468 ft-lb) at 3,800 rpm and reached 305 km/h (190 mph)
Also Carlsson offered engine tuning and body kits for the R171. Their good-looking interior upgrades were especially popular
RENNtech offered upgrades for the R171 for the North American market, starting with the SLK230 and bringing it up to 212 hp. It ended with an SLK55 and 460 hp
